Our Generation.
It’s been said that this generation grew up too fast, that we didn’t savor being young. Truthully, this can be said for nearly every generation, I think. That we try so hard to be grown up when we were young, striving to impress on everyone around us of our maturity and age. But once we are saddled with all the trappings and responsibilities of an adult, we want nothing more than to be kids again, to shirk the things we must do for a simpler time where choosing what to draw on a piece of paper was the hardest decision you’d have to make. But this is generally speaking, and I think that is just honestly the way it is; a perfect imperfection of humanity. When it comes to the generation I am a part of, as with all the ones before us, I do believe that we did we grew up fast, but I also believe that we didn’t mature in this growth.
We are dropping out of schools before we even know how to earn a living because we think we have better things to do than to educate our minds. We are giving birth to children without being able to even take care of ourselves, much less them. And for every birth that doesn’t happen, are broken hearts and torn relationships from the dozens of sexual encounters among kids who don’t know the power of intimacy. We are decadent, constantly drunk and high without thinking of the consequences, and in our decadence, we ignore our parents, believing them to be foolish for what they’re telling us, that they don’t want us to live happily or fully. We are impatient, and quick to become distracted. We won’t read anything that isn’t past 160 characters (admittedly, many are scrolling past this post because of its length), grumble at reading 10 pages of homework because the print is too small, or the subject is too dull. We complain about the stupidest things, minor inconveniences and small slip-ups, forgetting those that are less fortunate than us. We are wasteful, and sloppy, uncaring of destroying the planet we’re a part of. And the worst part to me is how we are so quick to say, “Those who criticize our generation forget who raised it,” as if it justifies anything. And then we turn around and slam on the 10 year olds with phones, the 12 year olds who show their bare bellies. And we forget who are the ones who are teaching them.
But I suppose I am dwelling on the negatives. Not that there’s much positivity here. In a general sense, I’d like to think that we are more accepting to individuality than others. That despite the harsh judgment many of us still carry, a lot of us are able to see any person as the human being they are, nothing more and nothing less. But I would like nothing more than a combination of our generation and the one before us. Where we can be accepting of each other, but still educated and chivalrous. I honestly don’t have a good ending to this rant. Just think about the things you do, the way things are heading. 50 years from now, are you going to be proud of the things you’ve done, or the things you contributed to the kids who follow?
