What are your Thoughts on Globalization?
I’m ashamed to admit that I had to google what globalization is and ask my boyfriend as well. I’m usually good with opinions over matters such as these, but I haven’t had an econ class in about 3 years, so I’m a bit rusty to the basic ins and outs of this term. From what I discerned, the basic concept of globalization is the integration of cultures, countries and peoples around the world. Economically speaking, it refers to international trade, something that has been going on for millennia if you look to history. With the variety of goods shipped to developing countries currently, the idea is that standard of living is supposedly increased. I may have skimmed over important bits, but that is the gist of it as far as I know.
Now, much like communism, globalization sounds great on paper. But, much like how the A student doesn’t want to lower his grade to a C because the F student failed the test once again, the integration of peoples has more often than not led to the complete assimilation and destruction of many a culture, the rich gaining more money, and wars over territory, weapons, and the like. I mean, in theory, a melting pot of all cultures, and peoples, would be ideal as well. But even in these United States, land of the free, do we have racism, sexism, homophobia, ablism, transphobia, and general hatred towards those we know nothing of. In theory, it should be a great act; it should bring forth a togetherness, a world peace, unity among people, and the reality is, it is of no fault of globalization that none of these things are realized. It is the people themselves who are to blame for the hatred, the greed, the lack of compassion towards other human beings. It is such a shame, because if we all understood one another, there would be much less needless suffering.
